German Grand Prix What to Watch
Before you have a chance to recover your breath, you must return to Hockenheim for the final race before Formula One's mid-season break. For the first time since 2014, Formula One will be racing in Germany for the sixth time in eight weeks after the race was removed from the schedule the previous year. This season has been full of action, controversy, and momentum shifts due to Mercedes's extremely busy schedule.
The Formula One German Grand Prix has returned to the schedule following a short break last year.
The Hockenheimring, a fast-paced track that is also quite taxing on the brakes, will host the 2016 race, round 12 of the Formula One World Championship, this weekend.
Famous circuit designer Hermann Tilke created the current layout, which is slightly more than 2.8 miles long.
Drivers reach over 186 mph on three separate occasions throughout the fast-paced first half of the lap. There are stadium, flip, and slow hairpin parts in the latter part.
Low grip levels and the unpredictable weather that Germany frequently experiences make the track difficult to navigate. A peak temperature of 79 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius) and sporadic rains are the current prediction for Sunday's race. The medium, soft, and supersoft compounds that Pirelli utilized for the Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend are the ones that the company has nominated.
Nico Rosberg of Mercedes AMG finished first in Friday's first practice session, followed by Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes. Ferrari [NYSE:RACE] had Sebastian Vettel in third place and Kimi Räikkönen in fourth.
With 192 points heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race, Hamilton dominates the 2016 Drivers' Championship. Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing sits in third place with 115 points, while Rosberg is in second place with 186 points. With 378 points, Mercedes leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Ferrari with 224 and Red Bull with 223 points. The final German Grand Prix was won by Rosberg in 2014.
Another piece of F1 news is that the F1 Strategy Group decided to implement cockpit protection in 2018. In order to allow for additional testing of the numerous suggested solutions—the most well-liked of which is the Halo, which has already been tried by a few teams—the group chose not to introduce it in 2017.
WEATHER FORECAST
"Hockenheim is traditionally a hot race by northern European standards," the official F1 website's destination guide states. Since temperatures are typically in the upper 20s Celsius, remember to bring the three S's: sunblock, shorts, and shades.
According to AccuWeather at the time of publication, top temperatures for the three days of on-track running this weekend should be between 26 and 28 degrees Celsius.
With the forecast predicting sun and some clouds throughout the weekend, rain seems improbable.
