Malaysian Grand Prix What to Watch
Even though the 2016 Formula One season is coming to an end, the teams are more used to traveling to Malaysia at the start of the year. The Sepang International Circuit event, which has historically been among the initial rounds of the season, is now back in the later time slot that it held for its first two years of existence in 1999 and 2000. Teams will have a lot of learning to do during Friday's practice sessions because this year's track surface is different and there are several reprofiled bends to deal with. At this point, any errors may be quite expensive.
Mercedes won the Singapore Grand Prix despite our efforts to build it up, but in an exciting finish, Daniel Ricciardo pushed Nico Rosberg all the way. Rosberg took the lead in the championship from a struggling Lewis Hamilton, who finished third, in one of his greatest race weekend performances. Red Bull's speed is obvious, but Ferrari might pose a threat at Sepang given Sebastian Vettel's victory in a straight fight in Malaysia the previous season. Following impressive performances in Singapore, McLaren and Toro Rosso are probably going to fall further behind Williams and Force India in the race for fourth place in the constructors' championship.
There were six races left in the 2015 season, and Hamilton was 41 points ahead of Rosberg. He is eight points behind this year. Fans of Hamilton, don't give up too easily, though, because Rosberg had a 22-point lead at this stage of the season in 2014, and we all know how that ended.
However, Hamilton appears to be having some difficulty at the moment, whereas Rosberg is obviously at ease in the vehicle.
Ricciardo is now 26 points ahead of his former teammate Vettel for third place behind the Mercs. With a solid showing this weekend, Alonso might move up into the top 10. He is five points behind Felipe Massa in 11th place.
WEATHER FORECAST
Although Sepang's weather is notoriously erratic, two things are typically predictable: heat and rain. It should be the same this weekend.
At the time of publication, AccuWeather reports that the daily high temperature is 32 degrees Celsius. Although not always during the on-track running, the forecast also predicts rain or thunderstorms every day.
As always, for a more precise reading, continue to monitor the prediction closer to the event.
