Mexican Grand Prix What to Watch

Audi has verified previous rumors that it will soon stop competing in the World Endurance Championship.

After 18 years of prototype racing, Audi will leave the category at the end of the 2016 season. (On November 19, the 6 Hours of Bahrain will be the last race.)

Audi managed 13 victories in the WEC's premier race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, throughout those years.

"It's obviously very difficult to leave after 18 years of prototype racing that were incredibly successful for Audi," said Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi motorsport, in a statement. "Audi has been showcasing Vorsprung durch Technik and learning a lot for use in production as a result of the LMP commitment."

Since the Volkswagen Group's diesel emissions scandal broke in September 2015, Audi's WEC campaign has been in trouble. Unfortunately for Audi, diesel technology has been the focus of its endurance racing efforts. The ongoing marketing of diesel technology is at odds with the new message the carmaker wants to convey, given the VW Group's new emphasis on electric technology.

Therefore, it should not be shocking that Audi has confirmed that it would compete in the Formula E Championship in 2017, one year before the e-tron SUV, its first mass-produced electric vehicle, is released. This new project will consume a significant amount of Audi's motorsport budget, and two motorsport-specific programs might be viewed as a little decadent given the VW Group's cost-cutting measures, which are another consequence of the emissions disaster.

The fact that Porsche, another VW Group brand, is also a competitor in the WEC is another unavoidable aspect. Since joining the elite LMP1 Hybrid class in 2014, where it faces off against Audi, Porsche has emerged as the new dominant power. Porsche is leading the 2016 season and is the current champion.

Additionally, Porsche's vehicles have gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrains, which aligns with the company's future product strategy.

We applaud Audi's efforts in elite endurance racing and anticipate what the four-ringed brand will achieve in the emerging field of electric vehicle racing.

WEATHER FORECAST

The weather forecast for Mexico City this weekend is not particularly noteworthy.

According to AccuWeather, the weekend will be overcast with highs between 19 and 22 degrees Celsius.

Although a thunderstorm is predicted for Sunday afternoon at the time of writing, there is just a 40% probability of rain, so don't get overly enthusiastic.
