United States Grand Prix What to Watch
Formula One appears to have finally found success at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, after multiple attempts over the last few decades to regain a strong presence in the US. And since American media behemoth Liberty Media now owns Formula One, there will probably be a lot more US Grands Prix in the future.
This Sunday's event, which is round 18 of the Formula One World Championship, is the 2016 race. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg of Mercedes AMG are the only drivers still in the running for the title, but the battle is still very much alive.
However, Rosberg has the advantage because the German can still win the championship if he finishes second each time, even if Hamilton wins the remaining four races this season.
F1 was the primary focus of COTA's design. It features 20 bends in all, some of which are reminiscent of corners from current and former Formula One courses. This circuit is extremely difficult for engineers and drivers since it has more fast corners than Spa-Francorchamps and more slow turns than the Hungaroring.
Furthermore, there is the breathtaking ascent that leads to the blind first corner. Cars lining up on the muddy side of the grid have a harder time getting traction than at any other circuit, so the start may be intriguing. Another factor contributing to the lack of grip is that the surface is still relatively new—the inaugural race was held in 2012.
Here, too, unpredictable weather can be a problem. The monsoon-like weather that forced the cancellation of qualifying at the previous year's US Grand Prix left a lasting impression. Thankfully, this year's weather seems favorable; the event is expected to take place on Sunday in partly cloudy conditions with a top temperature of 86 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).
Throughout the weekend, teams will depend on Pirelli's medium, soft, and supersoft compounds.
With 313 points heading into tomorrow's qualifying and Sunday's race, Rosberg is leading the 2016 Drivers' Championship. Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull Racing is still in third place with 212 points, while Hamilton is in second place with 280 points. Mercedes's unstoppable 593 points in the Constructors' Championship earned them the title of 2016 champions. With 385 points, Red Bull is still in second place, and Ferrari [NYSE:RACE] is in third place with 335 points. Hamilton was the winner in Austin last year.
WEATHER FORECAST
As you may remember, Austin saw some rain last year. Alright, quite a bit.
Due to the severe weather, the second free practice session was canceled, and qualifying was postponed till Sunday AM (Q3 was later cancelled as well). The race was exciting, though.
As of this writing, it appears that this year's weather will be considerably better. Indeed, according to AccuWeather, Friday will be "mostly sunny and delightful," with a high of 25 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures will gradually rise to a high of 27 degrees on Saturday and 29 degrees on race day over the sunny, partly cloudy weekend. Wonderful.
