Hungarian Grand Prix What to Watch

On Sunday, July 30, at the Hungaroring, our resident petrolhead gives a preview of the final Grand Prix before the mid-season break.
As the drivers prepare to depart for their mid-year break, which they won't return from until late August, it's that time of year when Formula One fans often feel a little depressed. With just one point separating Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton and Drivers' Championship leader Sebastian Vettel, there is still one race left, and it could end up being a season-defining one.

Before the field heads into the pits for a month-long break, will Hamilton pass his opponent or will Vettel maintain his lead?

Two weeks earlier, the drama continued in England when both Ferraris suffered punctures over the last three circuits at Silverstone. Although neither Sebastian Vettel nor Kimi Raikkonen had any intention of pursuing race leader Lewis Hamilton, they both lost a significant number of points. Raikkonen fell to third place when it appeared he would finish as the runner-up, and Vettel fell to seventh place when it appeared he might just make it onto the podium.

Valtteri Bottas took second place after Raikkonen's late blowout gave Mercedes a one-two result.

Daniel Ricciardo, who had started close to the bottom of the grid, was among the drivers who managed to sneak into the top six thanks to Vettel's puncture. In fact, Silverstone proved to be a very fruitful hunting ground for Red Bull, as his teammate Max Verstappen finished in fourth place in addition to the previously mentioned Ricciardo in fifth.

Nico Hulkenberg was another individual who took advantage of the late drama. The final position in the top six was a fitting reward for the Renault new boy's hard work. Sebastian Vettel (seventh), Esteban Ocon (eighth), Sergio Perez (ninth), and Felipe Massa (tenth) occupied the final four top 10 spots.

With the track being constructed close to the conclusion of the Cold War and having the quickest construction schedule of any Formula One facility—just over eight months—the Hungaroring is truly a marvel of Soviet innovation. The circuit is situated in Mogyorod, a city about eighteen kilometers outside of Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

With fourteen corners, the circuit has a total race distance of 306.63 kilometers. Drivers will compete across 70, 4.381-kilometer laps that include the start/finish straight and the two DRS Zones between turns one and two.

Mercedes won the previous year's race, with Lewis Hamilton taking first place and Nico Rosberg, who had retired, taking pole and placing second. Daniel Ricciardo took the last spot on the podium.

As of this writing, the local meteorological bureau has not issued any serious rain threats for the weekend, so the weather outlook appears to be very encouraging. However, one cannot rule out the possibility of wet tires showing up because this track has experienced its share of afternoon thunderstorms.
