Formula One Russian Grand Prix 2018 What to Watch
The Sochi Autodrom, Russia's first and only Formula One track, winds its way through the "summer capital."
The 5.8-kilometer course passes by several striking buildings, including a stadium from the 2018 FIFA World Cup and several that were used for the Winter Olympics in 2014. This demonstrates how Sochi has developed into a wonderful sports town and a major tourist destination.
Mercedes has won all four of the races since the circuit's inception; Lewis Hamilton won the first one in 2014, and Valtteri Bottas won his first Formula One race for the world champions in 2017.
This tradition of Mercedes domination might come to an end this year. The Ferrari engine has surpassed the Mercedes engine this year, and Sochi is typically a power track. Therefore, the Prancing Horse will put Mercedes to the test if they are to prevail.
According to Christian Horner, Red Bull will have a memorable race in Russia since they anticipate engine penalties and may even switch back to the B-Spec Renault engine following a number of teething problems with the Singaporean engine. The fact that neither the Renault team nor their other client, McLaren, used the new specification engine spoke volumes.
Following Romain Grosjean's disqualification, Williams driver Sergey Sirotkin earned his first point of the season in Italy. He will be looking to increase his total at this weekend's home race. With some outstanding defense against Sergio Perez in Singapore, he undoubtedly received some positive notice. However, Perez appeared to swing across the track and strike him. But for a Williams squad that has had one of its worst seasons in Formula One this year, this will be another challenging weekend.
Although there isn't usually much drama during races at the Sochi Autodrom, it's worth seeing the first chicane.
In the brief history of the track, there have been crashes at this location in all four races; the most well-known of these was when Daniil Kvyat struck Sebastian Vettel's back twice. After the race, Kvyat was relegated to Toro Rosso, making space for Max Verstappen's meteoric climb. It was a home race to forget.
Sebastian Vettel leads Lewis Hamilton by about 40 points going into the weekend, so he will need to win each of the six races left in 2018 to have a realistic chance of winning a fifth championship.
It will be a difficult task, but Ferrari has once again caused their own title loss this year, and if Vettel is to make a miraculous comeback, it must begin in Sochi.
