Formula One Belgian Grand Prix 2019 What to Watch
This weekend marks the return of the 2019 Formula One World Championship after the summer break. The Belgian Grand Prix, round 13, will take place at Spa-Francorchamps, one of the most prestigious and historic venues in the sport.
Some of the most dramatic races in Formula One history have taken place on the 4.35-mile track in the Ardennes region of Belgium. The race always draws a sizable and fervent crowd, and corners like Eau Rouge are well-known worldwide.
The Spa track has a famously difficult layout despite its beauty. Over 70% of the throttle is used, which is difficult for drivers and especially for power units that must provide strong top-end power, responsiveness, and drivability to handle Spa's tight turns. The tires also get a good workout because of the rapid turns and different levels of grip. Pirelli's C1, C2, and C3 tires have been nominated.
Teams must find the ideal balance to manage the circuit's combination of lengthy straights, significant elevation changes, and the aforementioned quick corners, which makes it challenging to arrive at the ideal car setup. For the long straightaways, a driver wants to have just enough downforce to go fast around the turns without carrying too much drag.
The weather's fluctuation is the last consideration. Because the circuit is so extensive, drivers may encounter rain in one spot and dry conditions in another. Thankfully, the weather forecast for Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race is expected to be pleasant.
Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari were leading the time sheets following some early practice on Friday; Vettel was only marginally quicker than his teammate. Max Verstappen of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing finished third, and Alexander Albon, the team's rookie, finished fourth, nearly a full second behind them.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG is leading the Drivers' Championship with 250 points heading into the weekend. Verstappen sits in third place with 181 points, followed by fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in second place with 188 points. Mercedes has 438 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Ferrari's 288 and Red Bull's 244. Vettel, who drives for Ferrari, won in Belgium last year.
