Formula One Japanese Grand Prix 2019 What to Watch

This weekend's Japanese Grand Prix marks the start of the 2019 Formula One World Championship's home stretch. The race is held at the legendary Suzuka Circuit, which is special because of its figure-eight track configuration, at round 17 on the season.

Almost all drivers will mention this track when asked to choose their top three tracks. It was created in 1962 as a test track for Honda by Dutch racetrack and automobile designer John Hugenholz, and it is well-known for its fast speeds and small runoff zones.

The 3.6-mile circuit is divided into two sections and has almost every kind of corner, including contoured curving curves, chicanes, hairpins, high speed kinks, and flowing linked turns. Power units must therefore produce over the whole power range without compromising responsiveness and driveability, which is a difficult task.

Because there isn't much heavy braking and, as was already said, there aren't many runoff zones, drivers are also unable to stop working. The secret to success on this track is having superb aero balance and a sense of rhythm. Strategy is also essential because the track is rather tight, making overtaking challenging.

Tire wear and degradation are significant because the track surface is also one of the roughest and most abrasive of the year. Pirelli has therefore selected the more difficult C1, C2, and C3 compounds for the weekend.

Typhoons are a possibility throughout this season, and Suzuka is notorious for its unpredictable weather. Rainfall during the night frequently resets the track by removing any rubber that has been placed down. The prognosis indicates that Saturday's qualifying session will be rainy, while Sunday's race should be held in ideal conditions.

Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes-AMG led the time sheets following Friday's practice. Lewis Hamilton, a fellow Mercedes driver, was just behind him, while Max Verstappen of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing finished third. Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari were also very up there, with their times being separated by less than a half-second. I'm hoping the race will be as competitive.

With 322 points heading into the weekend, Hamilton is leading the 2019 Drivers' Championship. Leclerc sits in third place with 215 points, followed by Bottas in second place with 249 points. Mercedes has 571 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Ferrari's 409 and Red Bull's 311. Hamilton, who was driving for Mercedes, won in Japan the previous year.
