Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2020 What to Watch
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, held at the Yas Marina Circuit this weekend, marks the completion of the 2020 Formula One World Championship.
One of the more recent venues on the schedule, the Hermann Tilke-designed track opened in 2009 and is renowned for its world-first permanent lighting system and air-conditioned pit garages. The Abu Dhabi race begins at dusk and continues into the night, just like other events in the Middle East.
There are 21 curves and three different sections on the 3.45-mile course, each of which presents a unique set of challenges for the vehicle. Cars and drivers are exposed to lateral acceleration of up to 4 g and speeds exceeding 155 mph at the first turn, which marks the beginning of a flowing series of bends. The final sector is tight and twisty and really puts a strain on the tires, followed by two very lengthy straights in the middle portion.
Countermoves are possible at the exit, crossing the racing line, and at the exit of turn 11, where overly late braking might cause a trip through an extremely dusty run-off region. The track offers very few opportunities for passing, most of which occur in the area of the chicane between turns 8 and 9.
Pirelli has selected the C3, C4, and C5 as its softest compounds for the weekend. Teams must be mindful of the shifting conditions because the race begins as the sun is sinking and track temperatures drop significantly as it progresses.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG is competing this weekend after missing Bahrain's Sakhir Grand Prix the previous weekend because to Covid-19 coronavirus isolation protocols. George Russell of Williams, who replaced Hamilton at Mercedes during the Bahrain race, is back with his own squad in Abu Dhabi.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing led an early practice session on Friday, followed by Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes and Esteban Ocon of Renault.
Hamilton, the 2020 champion, leads the Drivers' Championship with 332 points heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race. Verstappen sits in third place with 189 points, followed by Bottas in second place with 205 points. Mercedes has 540 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Red Bull's 282 and McLaren's 194. Hamilton, who drives for Mercedes, won in Abu Dhabi the previous year.
