Formula One Eifel Grand Prix 2020 What to Watch

This weekend's special Eifel Grand Prix at the storied Nürburgring marks Round 11 on the updated 2020 Formula One World Championship schedule.

The race will not take place on the well-known and rocky Nordschleife in the Eifel mountains. The smaller and safer grand prix circuit next to the Nordschleife has hosted Formula One races since 1984. Since then, the traditional German Grand Prix has only ever been held at the Hockenheimring, with the most recent being in 2013.

The layout of the Nürburgring Grand Prix course, with its variety of corners and high speeds of over 186 mph, is a challenging test for both driver and vehicle. With its abrupt curbs in the chicanes and a particularly challenging hairpin at Turn 7, this 3.2-mile course is well-known. Heading into the hairpin, there is a significant deceleration, and the front-left tire must work hard to make up for the unique camber.

The weather is another significant problem, especially during this season. Over the weekend, it is predicted to be windy, rainy, and cold, which might make the race extremely unpredictable. The tires will therefore be more important than normal. The C2, C3, and C4 are the middle-range compounds that Pirelli has nominated.

The first practice session has already been canceled due to bad weather on Friday.

Mercedes-AMG driver Lewis Hamilton leads the 2020 Drivers' Championship with 205 points heading into Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing sits in third place with 128 points, followed by fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in second place with 161. Mercedes has 366 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Red Bull's 192 and McLaren's 106.

Sebastian Vettel, who drove for Red Bull in the 2013 German Grand Prix, was the last Formula One racer to win at the Nürburgring.

In similar news, Mercedes reported on Thursday that the Covid-19 coronavirus has infected at least one of its employees. Testing was done on the entire crew; one person tested positive, while another gave an inconclusive result. This weekend, the two members and four others who were in close touch will not be present.
