Formula One Emilia Romagna Grand Prix 2020 What to Watch

Only five rounds remain on the 2020 Formula One World Championship's updated schedule, and the most recent one, round 13, is this weekend in Italy's Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, also known as Imola.

The last Formula One race was contested at this circuit in 2006, and it has hosted the Italian and San Marino Grands Prix. The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, which was added this weekend after the calendar was rearranged to circumvent the COVID-19 coronavirus limitations, is a special event.

Since the last Formula One race was staged here, the 3.08-mile track has undergone significant renovations and continued use. For example, the Variante Bassa is no longer in use, and two right-hand turns now divide the lengthy straight that leads into Tamburello. Additionally, there are new pit garages and additional run-off places, particularly at Variante Alta. The only remnant of the former start-finish complex is the old Marlboro tower.

There are nine turns on the right and twelve on the left in this anticlockwise circuit. Unlike the Portuguese Grand Prix last weekend, the course is very small in some parts, making overtaking challenging and emphasizing race strategy.

Although there are several large curbs and some bumps on the circuit, overall the surface is smooth, so the tires aren't under too much strain. Pirelli has therefore designated its mid-range C2, C3, and C4 compounds. According to the weather forecast, the weekend should provide pleasant weather.

The event will no longer be open to spectators due to the growing number of coronavirus cases in Europe. There will only be one practice session on Saturday morning, followed by qualifying in the afternoon, after Friday's practice was also canceled. The race on Sunday will proceed according to plan.

The Friday practice session in the previous Eifel Grand Prix at the Nürburgring was also canceled because of bad weather. In order to accommodate more rounds and provide teams enough time between them, the two-day format might be adopted as a permanent fixture in upcoming seasons.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG is leading the 2020 Drivers' Championship with 256 points heading into the weekend. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing sits in third place with 162 points, followed by fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in second place with 179 points. Mercedes has 435 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Red Bull's 226 and Racing Point's 126.
