Formula One Sakhir Grand Prix 2020 What to Watch

This weekend, the 2020 Formula One World Championship's penultimate round will take place in Bahrain, the site of the Bahrain Grand Prix just one week ago.

The Sakhir Grand Prix, the final special race added to the 2020 schedule after it had to be changed because of Covid-19 coronavirus disruptions, is this weekend's round.

The Bahrain International Circuit is situated in the Sakhir desert region of Bahrain, which is where the Sakhir Grand Prix gets its name. To mix things up a bit, the race this weekend will take place on the Bahrain International Circuit's fast Outer Track.

Up until Turn 4, the layout is the same as the regular track. After that, it enters an extremely fast stretch with five little bends, which rejoins the regular track on the straight after Turn 13. The final sector is the same as usual. It is only somewhat longer than Monaco's street circuit, which has the shortest track (2.07 miles) in modern Formula One, at 2.2 miles. Consequently, drivers are expected to complete 87 laps at an average speed of 143 mph during the race.

With new circuits, track surfaces are usually a hot topic. The surface on Bahrain's new portion is comparable to the existing circuit and composed of the same material, but it hasn't been used nearly as much, so it is less worn down. Similar to last week, Pirelli has nominated the C2, C3, and C4 tires for the race; however, this time, the tire pressures will be higher.

The schedule is different this weekend, with the race starting later in the evening rather than twilight, which is another way that the Sakhir Grand Prix differs from the Bahrain Grand Prix last week.

With 332 points, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG is leading the 2020 Drivers' Championship heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing sits in third place with 189 points, followed by fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in second place with 201 points. Mercedes has 533 points in the Constructors' Championship, while Red Bull has 274 and McLaren has 171.

George Russell, who will be trading in his Williams for Lewis Hamilton's Mercedes, will be the center of attention this weekend. After catching the coronavirus at the Bahrain Grand Prix, Hamilton, who has already been crowned the 2020 champion, will not be competing this weekend since he is currently in self-isolation. Jack Aitken will replace Norris at Williams, and Pietro Fittipaldi, who is still recuperating from his dramatic collision last weekend, will replace Romain Grosjean at Haas.
