Formula One Turkish Grand Prix 2020 What to Watch
After being absent from the Formula One schedule since 2011, the Turkish Grand Prix will return this weekend as round 14 of the 2020 season, which has been reorganized.
Istanbul Park Circuit, a 3.31-mile, anticlockwise course created by Hermann Tilke, has hosted the Turkish Grand Prix since its inaugural event in 2005.
Some of the most intriguing corners on the calendar are among its fourteen features. The first turn, which comes right after the start-finish straight and is a steep left-hander, is one of them. Because it resembles the well-known turn at Laguna Seca, it has been dubbed the Turkish Corkscrew. The infamous Turn 8, a fast four-apex left-hander that resembles sections of the Nürburgring Nordschleife, is the most well-known corner, nevertheless.
The tires are heavily taxed by the variety of fast turns. For example, the winner of the 2011 race, Sebastian Vettel, who was then racing for Red Bull Racing, had to stop four times. Pirelli has therefore nominated the C1, C2, and C3—its strongest compounds. Rain is predicted for both Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race, so it might be necessary to bring out the wets this weekend as well.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull was the fastest after Friday's practice session, followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes-AMG.
Hamilton can win the 2020 championship and tie Michael Schumacher's record seven-time championship total by simply finishing the Turkish race with more points than Bottas. With 93 victories to far, Hamilton has now surpassed Schumacher's long-standing record of 91.
Hamilton leads the 2020 Drivers' Championship going into the weekend with 282 points, ahead of Bottas' 197 and Verstappen's 162. Mercedes has already won the Constructors' Championship this year and now has 479 points, compared to Red Bull's 226 and Renault's 135 points.
