Formula One Mexico City Grand Prix 2021 What to Watch

Mexico will host the 18th round of the 2021 Formula One World Championship this weekend.

To better reflect its location in the Mexican capital, the race, which was formerly known as the Mexican Grand Prix, has been renamed the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The annual race takes place on the 2.67-mile Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit, which is just outside of Mexico City. It was not held last year because of Covid-19 restrictions. Although the circuit's name and design have evolved over time, the Mexican race has always been held there. Renowned circuit architect Herman Tilke made the most current design changes to the course before the 2015 event.

Additionally, the circuit is nearly 7,500 feet above sea level, which makes cooling more difficult and the air's lower density making engines work harder. Due to the reduced drag impact of thin air, the cars also usually operate in high-downforce mode.

On the approach to Turn 1, cars are reaching about 230 mph, which is one of the season's highest top speeds. Additionally challenging is the weather, which can include both warm temperatures and a lot of rain. According to the present forecast, the weekend should be pleasant.

As with 2019, but more difficult than in 2018, Pirelli has nominated the C2 as the P Zero White hard, the C3 as the P Zero Yellow medium, and the C4 as the P Zero Red soft. Elevated graining seen in the 2018 race led to the decision to switch to the tougher compound.

With 287.5 points, Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen leads the 2021 Drivers' Championship heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG is in second place with 275.5 points, while Valtteri Bottas, a Mercedes driver, is in third place with 185 points. Mercedes has 460.5 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Red Bull's 437.5 and McLaren's 254. Hamilton, who was driving for Mercedes, was the 2019 Mexican winner.
