Formula One Qatar Grand Prix 2021 What to Watch

Pirelli's C1 compound has been selected as the P Zero White hard, C2 as the P Zero Yellow medium, and C3 as the P Zero Red soft for the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix, which will span 57 laps. This is the fifth and final nomination of the range's three hardest compounds this year.
According to available statistics and team simulations, Losail is a high-severity circuit with abrasive asphalt and extremely difficult turns, akin to Silverstone or Mugello. Sand from the desert around the track may also have an impact on the grip. Because Qatar is a brand-new location for Formula 1, Pirelli has chosen the three hardest compounds, which can withstand all of Losail's diverse requirements.

We give you a preview of the Losail International Circuit, which was built for motorcycle racing, in advance of Qatar's first Formula 1 race, which will be a regular event in the F1 calendar starting in 2023. Qatar is the first of three night races that will conclude the thrilling 2021 F1 season.

Designed for MotoGP racing, the Losail International Circuit is close to the capital city of Doha. It took just over a year to build, and the track was prepared for the first MotoGP event in 2004.

The circuit will hold its inaugural Formula 1 race in 2021, and Qatar has agreed to a ten-year contract starting in 2023. The track where the 2023 event will be held is still unknown.

Given the features of the 5.38 km course, which mostly consists of medium and fast corners that put tires under a lot of strain, Pirelli is expected to deliver the three hardest tire compounds (C1, C2, and C3) to the first Formula One race in Qatar.

The asphalt has not changed since 2004 and has meanwhile become very abrasive, which also contributes to high tyre degradation and wear while high speeds corners are reminiscent of Silverstone and Mugello although Losail is a fairly flat track when it comes to altitude changes.

The start-finish straight is just over one kilometer long, which should provide a good opportunity to overtake in the only DRS zone. The track has 16 turns, ten right and six left, which are very close to each other so the tyres do not have much time to cool down.

The tarmac may still be rather dusty, especially before the first free practice begins, despite the installation of artificial grass around the track to lessen the amount of sand from the desert that accumulates on it. This is an issue that Bahraini teams are dealing with.

Drivers pass as one long, fast turn with a lateral acceleration of over 5 g as they make three right turns (12, 13, and 14), which is evocative of the well-known Istanbul Eight but in the opposite direction.

Along with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Abu Dhabi, the race is one of four scheduled at night in the 2021 Formula One season. As a result, it will be challenging to be ready for the weekend and get the best performance out of the tires because the atmospheric conditions in the first and third will differ greatly from those in the second training, qualifying, and race.

There won't be any support racing series for the inaugural Formula 1 weekend in Qatar, which will impede the track's development. The Formula 2 season finale is set for the final two weekends of the season in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi.

Because of the track's primarily fast bends, George Russell, a current Williams F1 driver and prospective Mercedes driver, likened it to Mugello.
