Formula One Saudi Arabian Grand Prix 2021 What to Watch
Saudi Arabia will host Round 21 of the 2021 Formula One World Championship this weekend.
The first round is the penultimate of current season, and Saudi Arabia is the latest new venue on the Formula One calendar, joining Qatar. With Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leading the race and vying for his first world title, the title fight is still very much alive at this late point. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG is the sole other competitor for the title. The current champion is trying to win an unprecedented ninth championship.
Verstappen must place at least second and earn the bonus point for the fastest lap in order to win the Saudi Arabian title, while Hamilton must place tenth or worse. The championship bout is probably going to go to the last round in Abu Dhabi the following weekend, given Hamilton's performance this season.
The Jeddah Corniche Circuit, a street circuit in the seaside city of Jeddah, is hosting the first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. Hermann Tilke, a renowned circuit architect, created the layout.
With a total distance of 3.83 miles, including a lengthy stretch that parallels the shoreline, it is the second-longest track on the calendar, behind Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. Its flowing corners, which do not have the typical 90-degree turns near the walls, set it apart from other street circuits. Additionally, there are areas that appear to be extremely fast; according to some calculations, the average speed is around 160 mph, and in certain places, it exceeds 200 mph. In addition to the three DRS zones that are planned, there are overtaking opportunities in other parts. The event will take place on Sunday night, with drivers completing 50 laps.
The forecast calls for mild but muggy weather. Drivers should anticipate a slick surface during Friday's practice because the track has never been utilized for a race before. The grip level will increase during Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race. Two support events that will aid in tracking evolution are Formula 2 and a Porsche competition.
The middle-range compounds that Pirelli has nominated are C2 (the P Zero White hard), C3 (the P Zero Yellow medium), and C4 (the P Zero Red soft).
Verstappen leads the 2021 Drivers' Championship with 351.5 points heading into the weekend. Valtteri Bottas, another Mercedes driver, is in third place with 203 points, while Hamilton is in second place with 343.5 points. Mercedes leads the Constructors' Championship with 546.5 points, followed by Red Bull with 541.5 and Ferrari with 297.5
