Formula One Turkish Grand Prix 2021 What to Watch

This weekend marks the return of a unique Turkish Grand Prix to the 2021 Formula One World Championship schedule for the second consecutive year. The race this year replaces the Singapore Grand Prix, which was canceled because of COVID-19 regulations.

From the first race in 2005 to the final regular race in 2011, the Turkish race was a regular event on the Formula One calendar. It has always taken place at the 3.31-mile, anticlockwise Istanbul Park Circuit, which was constructed by Hermann Tilke.

Some of the most intriguing corners on the calendar are among its fourteen features. The first turn, which comes right after the start-finish straight and is a steep left-hander, is one of them. Because it resembles the well-known turn at Laguna Seca, it has been dubbed the Turkish Corkscrew. Turn 8, regarded as one of the finest corners in Formula One, is the most well-known corner. With multiple apexes that impose forces on the vehicles and tires that peak at more than 5 g, it is extremely long—12 percent of the lap—and fast.

Teams typically use a more difficult tire combination as a result. Pirelli's P Zero Red soft (C4), P Zero Yellow medium (C3), and P Zero White hard (C2) have all been nominated. Compared to last year, this combo is a little softer. Last year, a single halt was the most common tactic. Additionally, teams will need to be mindful of the weather, as both the qualifying session on Saturday and the race on Sunday are expected to see some light rain.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG led the 2021 Drivers' Championship going into the weekend with 246.5 points, ahead of Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing with 244.5 and Mercedes' Valtteri Bottas with 151. Mercedes leads the Constructors' Championship with 397.5 points, while Red Bull has 364.5 and McLaren has 234. Hamilton, who was driving for Mercedes, won in Turkey the previous year. He won his seventh world championship there, setting a new record.

In other Formula One news, Red Bull has declared that, following the 2021 season, it would create a new subsidiary called Red Bull Powertrains to manage the research and manufacturing of the current Honda power unit that Red Bull and feeder team AlphaTauri employ. Honda will work with Red Bull Powertrains to construct the power unit through 2022, after which Red Bull Powertrains will assume full responsibility until the introduction of a next-generation power unit in 2026. Honda will formally exit Formula One at the end of the current season.
