Formula One Italian Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch

This weekend, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza will host the Italian Grand Prix, round 16 of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship.

Similar to the British Grand Prix, the Italian Grand Prix has been a part of the Formula One schedule since the first season in 1950. With the exception of 1980, when it was hosted at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, it has always taken place in Monza, which is just outside of Milan. In order to make up for races in other places that were postponed because of pandemic-related restrictions, Formula One has added more rounds in Italy in recent years.

Monza is the only historic high-speed track that currently hosts an F1 race after the original Hockenheimring track layout in Germany was destroyed. The absence of chicanes on the lengthy straightaways in the past resulted in extremely close racing, with the slipstreaming effect causing hundreds of overtaking maneuvers every lap.

However, the Italian Grand Prix dates back to 1921, making it a lot older than Formula One. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the construction of Monza, which held its first Italian Grand Prix a week after it was finished.

Currently, drivers spend 76% of the lap time and 83% of the lap distance at full speed on Monza's 3.6-mile track, which is composed of a number of straights and several tight chicanes. The vehicles reach above 200 mph in at least four stages, and it offers the season's fastest average speed.

Cars are therefore configured with low downforce in order to enhance their top speeds. As a result, they become increasingly reliant on the tires' mechanical traction to keep them stable around turns. The rubber compounds that Pirelli has suggested are C2 (white hard), C3 (yellow medium), and C4 (red soft).

This time of year, Monza typically has hot weather, which is advantageous because the lengthy straightaways can cause the tires to cool down excessively in warmer conditions. Both Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race are predicted to be warm and sunny, with the highest temperature reaching 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2022 Drivers' Championship with 310 points heading into the weekend. Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc, who each have 201 points, are in second and third place. Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship with 511 points. Mercedes-Benz AMG is in third place with 346 points, followed by Ferrari in second place with 376 points. Daniel Ricciardo of McLaren was the Monza winner the previous year.
