Formula One Japanese Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch
This weekend marks the return of the Japanese Grand Prix to the Formula 1 schedule, which was last held in 2019. The event, which is round 18 of the 2022 season, is held at the renowned Suzuka Circuit, which is special because of its figure-eight track configuration.
Almost all drivers will mention this circuit when asked to choose their top three circuits. John Hugenholz, a Dutch racetrack and automobile designer, created it in 1962 as a Honda test track. It was officially opened as an F1 circuit in 1987. Its fast speeds and small runoff zones have earned it a bad reputation.
The 3.6-mile circuit is divided into two sections and has almost every kind of corner, including contoured curving curves, chicanes, hairpins, high speed kinks, and flowing linked turns. Power units must therefore produce over the whole power range without compromising responsiveness and driveability, which is a difficult task.
Because there isn't much heavy braking and, as was already said, there aren't many runoff zones, drivers are also unable to stop working. The secret to success on this track is having superb aero balance and a sense of rhythm. Strategy is also essential because the track is rather tight, making overtaking challenging.
Tire wear and degradation are significant because the track surface is also one of the roughest and most abrasive of the year. The tougher C1 has been nominated by Pirelli as the White hard, the Yellow medium as C2, and the Red soft as C3 for the weekend.
Typhoons are a possibility throughout this season, and Suzuka is notorious for its unpredictable weather. The current prediction predicts sunny conditions for Saturday's qualifying and maybe additional rain for Sunday's race, following some heavy rain during Friday's practice session.
George Russell of Mercedes-Benz AMG was the fastest after Friday's practice, surpassing Lewis Hamilton, a teammate. Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez of Red Bull Racing, who finished third and fourth fastest, respectively, were not far behind.
Verstappen leads the 2022 Drivers' Championship with 341 points heading into the weekend. Perez sits in third place with 235 points, followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in second place with 237 points. Red Bull has 576 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Ferrari's 439 and Mercedes' 373. The Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas won the 2019 Japanese Grand Prix.
