Formula One Mexico City Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch

This weekend's Mexican Grand Prix, round 20 of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, will be held at Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

The yearly event, known as the Mexico City Grand Prix, takes place on a 2.7-mile course at an elevation of about 7,500 feet. Engines have to work harder when the air density is thinner, and it's also difficult to generate enough cooling and downforce. Things should get a little more interesting this season with the return of ground effects.

Although the circuit's name and design have evolved over time, the Mexican race has always been held there. Renowned circuit architect Herman Tilke was in charge of the most current redesign, which was completed when the Mexican Grand Prix returned to the Formula One schedule in 2015.

A long straight, a mixed middle sector, and the renowned Peraltada—which has been significantly altered from its original use as a parabolic corner evoking the one at Monza—make up the current configuration.

At 2,660 feet, the layout is renowned for having the largest distance between the starting line and the first corner's braking position. During that first long straight, cars hit about 230 mph, which is one of the season's highest top speeds.

Mexico experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the day, even within a few hours, which impacts the tires' ability to provide traction. Pirelli has nominated the middle-range C2 as the White hard tire, C3 as the Yellow medium tire, and C4 as the Red soft tire, much like at the United States Grand Prix last weekend.

Warm temperatures and heavy precipitation are also potential problems. Both Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race are expected to see some rain, according to the current prediction.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads with 391 points heading into the weekend. Sergio Perez of Red Bull sits in third place with 265 points, followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in second place with 267 points. Red Bull has 656 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Ferrari's 469 and Mercedes-Benz AMG's 416. The Red Bull driver Verstappen won in Mexico last year.

Notably, Red Bull won the constructors' championship at the United States Grand Prix last weekend, and Verstappen was previously crowned the 2022 world champion at the Japanese Grand Prix on October 9.
