Formula One Sao Paulo Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch
This weekend, the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship's penultimate race, the Brazilian Grand Prix, will be held at São Paulo's Autódromo José Carlos Pace.
The Brazilian Grand Prix is a race that nearly always has excitement, so even though the Drivers' and Constructors' titles have been decided, it will still be worth watching.
The sprint race is back for qualifying this year, which could make things a little more exciting.
In the sprint race qualifying format, the starting grid for a 62-mile sprint race on Saturday is decided by a traditional time-based qualifying session that follows a single practice session on Friday. The starting grid for the full-length race on Sunday is decided by the sprint race results. There are also some points up for grabs, which isn't typically the case during qualifying.
The Brazilian Grand Prix is held at the Interlagos track, which has a small layout that leads to a lot of passing and a number of cars going off the racing line. Additionally, drivers are kept busy by a continuous series of turns, totaling fifteen.
The majority of the corners are very short, so lateral loads on the tires aren't too taxing, with the exception of the lengthy uphill Arquibancada left-hander. Similar to previous year, Pirelli has nominated its C2 compound as the White hard, C3 as the Yellow medium, and C4 as the Red soft.
Some grooves have been carved in the asphalt to aid drainage in the event of heavy rain, as the weather in Brazil during this time of year can vary from extreme heat to torrential rain. Rain is already falling in São Paulo, and more is expected to fall throughout the sprint race on Saturday and the full-length event on Sunday.
The 2022 champion, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing, leads the Drivers' Championship with 416 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari sits in third place with 275 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 280 points. With 696 points, Red Bull has already won the Constructors' Championship, while Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz AMG have 487 and 447 points, respectively. Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton won the race in Brazil last year.
