Formula One Singapore Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch

This weekend, for the first time since 2019, we travel to Singapore and its Marina Bay Circuit for Round 17 of the 2022 Formula One World Championship.

The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the season's highlights because of the extreme heat and humidity, which make it extremely difficult for both drivers and cars. The race lasts for two hours, which doesn't help either.

The race is also well-known for being held at night, when 1,600 lighting provide visibility across the twisting street course. Drivers frequently use tinted visors to lessen the glare because they shine so brightly.

Similar to Monaco, Singapore's short straights, tight turns, and uneven surface prevent speeds from reaching particularly high levels, yet this combination still makes the race one of the most difficult to set up for. The upside is that it increases the chances for some of the slower clubs.

In Singapore, unpredictable weather can also be a problem; stormy conditions are predicted for both Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race. The event is predicted to have a gentler peak temperature than recent years, with highs of about 85 degrees.

The softer C3 is designated as the White hard tire by Pirelli, followed by the Yellow medium tire (C4) and the Red soft tire (C5). This year's track surface is different, and teams will also have to deal with the track's high degree of evolution and typical street features like manholes and white lines that can change the amount of grip.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2022 Drivers' Championship with 335 points heading into the weekend. Sergio Perez of Red Bull sits in third place with 210 points, followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in second place with 219 points. With 545 points, Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Ferrari with 406 and Mercedes-Benz AMG with 371 points.

If Verstappen wins the race and receives a bonus point for the fastest lap, he might win the title in Singapore, according to the current standings; however, Leclerc would need to place ninth or worse. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel was the previous Singapore champion.
