Formula One United States Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch

This weekend, the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, will host the United States Grand Prix, Round 19 of the 2022 Formula One World Championship.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing was declared champion at the Japanese Grand Prix two weeks ago, meaning that the 2022 Drivers' Championship race is already set.

But with Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in third place and Red Bull's Sergio Perez in second, the race for second place is still very much in play. Although Red Bull is practically guaranteed to win the Constructors' Championship in Austin, the race is still going on.

Because it was expressly created with Formula One in mind, COTA has already established itself as a track capable of showcasing F1 vehicles at their finest, even though it is one of the more recent venues on the Formula One calendar (the inaugural race was held there in 2012).

The 3.4-mile course, in particular, features 20 unique curves, some of which are reminiscent of ones found on current and former Formula One circuits. The circuit is extremely difficult for teams and drivers because it has more fast corners than Spa-Francorchamps and more slow turns than the Hungaroring. Turn 1's uphill hairpin, however, is clearly COTA's hallmark corner.

Because of subsidence, the track surface is among the bumpiest. Although it is either ground down or resurfaced in the winter to address this, the bumps' shifting placement and intensity throughout the year make them difficult to avoid.

Although the prediction for Austin this weekend indicates that we should expect pleasant but cool conditions for both Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race, unpredictable weather can still be a problem here.

C3 has been nominated as the Yellow medium, C4 as the Red soft, and C2 as the White hard by Pirelli. Teams used a two-stop plan last year, but this year they might use different tactics because they have a whole new set of tires.

With 366 points heading into the weekend, Verstappen leads the Drivers' Championship by an insurmountable margin. Leclerc is in third place with 252 points, followed by Perez in second place with 253 points. Red Bull has 619 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Ferrari's 454 and Mercedes-Benz AMG's 387. Verstappen, a Red Bull driver, won in Austin last year.
