Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing was crowned this season's champion in the Qatar Grand Prix in October, but the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship's last round is this weekend in Abu Dhabi.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG finished third in the championship, while Sergio Perez, another Red Bull driver, finished second. Verstappen isn't going to slow down at all, though, as his record for wins in a season rises with every victory. He has eighteen points ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Verstappen also set the previous record of 15 last season.

Every year, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is held at the Yas Marina Circuit. After opening in 2009, the Hermann Tilke-designed circuit underwent a few minor adjustments in 2021 to enhance the action. A chicane that had formed in curves 5 and 6 was replaced with a straight, and several curves were expanded. In addition to increasing speeds and loads around particular turns, the modifications offer more options for overtaking.

Because of the track's continued relative smoothness, the tires only experience average wear and degradation. Thus, the C3 is the white hard, the C4 is the yellow medium, and the C5 is the red soft. These are Pirelli's three softest compounds.

According to the weather forecast, the weekend will be pleasant and dry. To avoid the heat of the day, the Abu Dhabi race, like other events in the Middle East, begins at twilight and continues into the night. This is a problem for the engineers and drivers who have to account for the variations in tire and vehicle behavior caused by the varying track and ambient temperatures.

Verstappen's unassailable 2023 Drivers' Championship point total is 549 going into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race. Hamilton is in third place with 232 points, while Perez is in second place with 273 points. Red Bull currently has 822 points in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari sits in third place with 388 points, followed by Mercedes in second place with 392 points. Verstappen, a Red Bull driver, won in Abu Dhabi last year.

Alfa Romeo, who declared its intention to leave Formula One in 2022, will be competing in its final race of the season. The Swiss team Sauber, which will race under its own name in the upcoming seasons before switching to Audi in 2026 as the carmaker's official factory team, represents Alfa Romeo in Formula One.

Prior to this weekend's race, McLaren also declared that it will keep using Mercedes power units until 2030, making it one of the customer teams using Mercedes' power units that are being built to comply with the new standards for 2026.
