Formula One Belgian Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch

This weekend's round 13 of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship is the Belgian Grand Prix, which will feature the return of the Saturday Sprint race at the storied Spa-Francorchamps circuit.

The lengthy, relentless track of the Spa circuit, which is tucked away in the picturesque Ardennes hills, is a harsh test for both driver and vehicle. Drivers experience over 5 g in some of the curves, such Turn 10, also known as Pouhon, and the average speed is close to 145 mph, making it one of the fastest laps of the season. Additionally, the cars spend about 80% of the lap at full speed.

The race lasts just 44 laps, which is the shortest on the schedule, because Spa has the longest circuit, at 4.35 miles. Because the track is so large, it is common for various sections to experience diverse weather conditions. For instance, sunlight at one end and rain at the other. There have already been suggestions that the race would be canceled due to the forecast's strong rainfall predictions for the weekend.

At Spa, the second sector is tricky, while the first and third sectors have vast straights and flat-out stretches. Finding the ideal balance and setup compromise becomes difficult as a result, especially when it comes to the wing level.

Because the track surface is somewhat abrasive, tires are put through a lot of strain. C2 is the White hard, C3 is the Yellow medium, and C4 is the Red soft, according to Pirelli's nominations for its mid-range compounds.

Following the Grands Prix in Austria and Azerbaijan, the Saturday Sprint race will run for the third time in 2023 at the Belgian round. Previously, the Sprint race served as a qualifying event for the main race, but this season it is now a stand-alone event. But championship points are still up for grabs for teams and drivers alike.

Some teams will be running modifications during the final stop before summer break, notably Mercedes-Benz AMG, whose vehicles will have a new side pod design.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2023 Drivers' Championship with 281 points heading into the weekend. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 139 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Perez in second place with 171 points. In the Constructors' Championship, Red Bull has 452 points, while Mercedes and Aston Martin are in second and third place with 223 and 184 points, respectively. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, was the winner in Belgium last year.
