Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
This weekend, teams are in São Paulo for the Brazilian Grand Prix, which is the third and last leg of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship's American tripleheader.
This year marks the race's 50th anniversary. It will be the year's last solo Sprint race and round 21 on the 2023 schedule.
The Autódromo José Carlos Pace, which most fans refer to as Interlagos since it is located between two lakes, is the scene of all the action. Due to its small size, the 2.7-mile track typically sees a lot of overtaking, and drivers are regularly need to leave the racing line. Drivers are kept busy by an endless series of turns.
The majority of those turns are very short, so lateral loads on the tires aren't too taxing, with the exception of the lengthy uphill Arquibancada left-hander. The C3 compound is the yellow medium, the C4 is the red soft, and the C2 compound is the white hard, according to Pirelli.
Some grooves have been carved in the asphalt to aid drainage in the event of heavy rain, as the weather in Brazil during this time of year can vary from extreme heat to torrential rain. Nonetheless, based on the current São Paulo prediction, the weekend should provide pleasant weather.
The Sprint race's final round this year will be in Brazil. Previously, the Sprint race served as a qualifying event for the main race, but this season it was changed to a stand-alone event. But championship points are still up for grabs for teams and drivers alike. With qualifying moved to Friday and the main race still scheduled for Sunday, the Sprint race is held on Saturday.
The race for second place in both the Constructors' and Drivers' championships is still very much in play, despite Red Bull Racing and star driver Max Verstappen having already won these crowns this season. Verstappen also has the opportunity to increase his record of 16 wins in a single season.
Verstappen has an insurmountable 491-point lead in the 2023 Drivers' Championship going into the weekend. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG sits in third place with 220 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 240 points. Red Bull currently has 731 points in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari sits in third place with 349 points, followed by Mercedes in second place with 371 points. George Russell, who drove for Mercedes, won in Brazil last year.
