Formula One Italian Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch

The Italian Grand Prix, round 15, of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, takes place this weekend.

The Autodromo Nazionale Monza, which is situated just outside of Milan, will host the race once more as the season's last European round. Because top speeds frequently surpass 217 mph during an F1 weekend, the circuit is known as the Temple of Speed.

Similar to the British Grand Prix, the Italian Grand Prix has been a part of the Formula One schedule since the first season in 1950. With the exception of 1980, when it was hosted at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, it has always taken place in Monza. The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is the second Italian round that Formula One has added, and it is held in Imola. This year, it was canceled because to severe floods at the planned period.

The only historic high-speed track that still hosts an F1 race is Monza. However, the Italian Grand Prix dates back to 1921, making it a lot older than Formula One. The following year, Monza was constructed, making it almost a century old. Only a week after it was finished, it held its maiden Italian Grand Prix.

The 3.6-mile track layout at Monza today is made up of some tight chicanes and a number of straights. There are just eleven corners on the circuit: seven on the right and four on the left. With ten, the Austrian Grand Prix's Red Bull Ring had the second-fewest of the year.

Usually, drivers use full throttle for 80% of the lap distance and 77% of the lap time. At 82%, only the Jeddah Street Circuit during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix sees more time spent at full speed. Cars are therefore configured with low downforce in order to enhance their top speeds. As a result, they become increasingly reliant on the tires' mechanical traction to keep them stable around turns. In a slightly softer combination than the previous year, Pirelli has selected its C3 compound as the White hard, C4 as the Yellow medium, and C5 as the Red soft.

This time of year, Monza typically has hot weather, which is advantageous because the lengthy straightaways can cause the tires to cool down excessively in warmer conditions. Both Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race are predicted to be warm and sunny, with the highest temperature reaching 87 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius).

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2023 Drivers' Championship with 339 points heading into the weekend. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 168 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 201 points. With 540 points, Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Mercedes-Benz AMG in second place with 255 and Aston Martin in third place with 215. Verstappen, who drove for Red Bull, won at Monza last year.
