Formula One Japanese Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
The Japanese Grand Prix, round 17 of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, is held this weekend at the storied Suzuka Circuit.
The racetrack is distinct because it has two levels of racing surfaces arranged in a figure-eight pattern. It is the only F1 track with a clockwise and counterclockwise layout. Originally created as a test track for Honda in 1962, it was transformed into an F1 track in preparation for the 1987 season by Dutch racetrack and automobile designer John Hugenholz.
The 3.6-mile circuit is divided into two sections and has almost every kind of corner, including contoured curving curves, chicanes, hairpins, flowing linked turns, and high-speed kinks. However, Suzuka is only one of four racetracks on the calendar with a single DRS zone because there aren't many straights.
Additionally, there aren't many locations for runoff or strong braking, which presents a significant obstacle for drivers. It is also challenging to overtake due to the low width. Finding a nice rhythm and having good aero balance are the best tactics.
Tire wear and degradation are significant because the track surface is also one of the roughest and most abrasive of the year. As a result, Pirelli has designated C1 as the white hard, C2 as the yellow medium, and C3 as the red soft as its harder compounds for the weekend.
Typhoons are a possibility throughout this season, and Suzuka is notorious for its unpredictable weather. But according to the present forecast, the weekend will be pleasant and bright.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing was the fastest after some practice on Friday. He was followed by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Lando Norris of McLaren. Additionally, AlphaTauri revealed that Liam Lawson, the reserve driver, will once more take Daniel Ricciardo's place due to injury.
With 374 points heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race, Verstappen is leading the 2023 Drivers' Championship. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG sits in third place with 180 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 223 points. With 597 points, Red Bull is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari sits in third place with 265 points, followed by Mercedes in second place with 289 points. Verstappen, racing for Red Bull, won in Japan last year.
