Formula One Mexico Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch

This weekend's Mexican Grand Prix, round 20 of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, will be held at Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Even though Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing has already won the title this season, there is always a lot of activity in the Mexican Grand Prix, and the race for second place in the championship is still very much in play. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-Benz AMG and Sergio Perez of Red Bull are the two front-runners.

This weekend could also establish a new record. With 15 victories so far this season, Verstappen has tied the record he set the previous year, and it's likely that he will add one or more more victories in the remaining races. Earlier this season, he also set a new record with ten consecutive victories.

Officially known as the Mexico City Grand Prix, the race takes place on a 2.7-mile course at an elevation of about 7,500 feet. Engines have to work harder when the air density is thinner, and it's also difficult to generate enough cooling and downforce. Because of the low air density, top speeds are among the highest of the season, with cars usually reaching 217 mph.

A long straight, a mixed middle sector, and the renowned Peraltada—which has been significantly altered from its original use as a parabolic corner evoking the one at Monza—make up the current configuration. At 2,660 feet, the layout is renowned for having the largest distance between the starting line and the first corner's braking position.

Mexico experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the day, even within a few hours, which impacts the tires' ability to provide traction. In contrast to last year, Pirelli has nominated its C3 compound as the white hard tire, the C4 as the yellow medium tire, and the C5 as the red soft tire.

Warm temperatures and heavy precipitation are also potential problems. On the other hand, excellent weather is predicted for the entire weekend.

With 466 points heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race, Verstappen is leading the 2023 Drivers' Championship. With 240 points, Perez is in second place, and Hamilton is in third place with 201 points. Red Bull now holds 706 points and has already won the Constructors' Championship. Third place goes to Ferrari (322 points), followed by Mercedes (344 points). Verstappen, who was driving for Red Bull, won in Mexico the previous year.
