Formula One Saudi Arabian Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
This weekend, the Red Sea coast's Jeddah Corniche Circuit will host the second round of the 2023 Formula One World Championship.
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is held at the track, which is described as the fastest street circuit in the world. The race is being held for the third time this year.
Renowned circuit architect Hermann Tilke created the track layout for the 3.83-mile circuit, which is second only to the 4.35-mile Spa-Francorchamps.
Its average speed in the last two races has been over 150 mph, and it contains 27 bends, more than any other circuit on the schedule.
The track surface provides a moderate amount of traction, although significant variations in wind direction and sand carried in from the neighboring desert can have an impact. The White hard, Yellow medium, and Red soft are the three medium compounds that Pirelli has proposed for the event.
Since the Saudi race begins at twilight and continues into the night, teams must also contend with sudden temperature variations as the race goes on. According to the current weather forecast, the weekend will be pleasant with highs of about 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
This year's track modifications include softer curbs and new rumble strips on the escape paths. Additionally, several of the walls have been moved to slow down bends in some places and help with visibility in others.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing was the fastest after some practice on Friday. He was closely followed by teammate Sergio Perez, and then Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll of Aston Martins. Additionally, it was confirmed that Charles Leclerc of Ferrari would have to accept a grid penalty of ten places due to exceeding his allotted power unit control electronics.
With twenty-five points, Verstappen leads the 2023 Drivers' Championship heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race. Alonso is in third place with 15 points, while Perez is in second place with 18. Red Bull has 43 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Aston Martin's 23 and Mercedes-Benz AMG's 16. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, won in Saudi Arabia last year.
