Formula One Singapore Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
This weekend, the annual Singapore Grand Prix will take place in Southeast Asia, marking the 16th round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship.
It's the perfect place for a competitor to break Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen's record-tying 10-win streak because winning the race doesn't depend heavily on having the fastest car. In Singapore, Verstappen has yet to claim a victory.
Similar to Monaco, Singapore's Marina Bay Circuit has short straights, tight turns, and a rough surface, which prevents speeds from rising much. Despite this, the race is one of the most difficult to set up for optimal performance. Singapore's extreme heat and humidity make it a difficult place for both drivers and cars, and the race's lengthy two-hour duration doesn't help either. The race is held at night to combat the heat.
Because of some construction going on around the street circuit, this year's race will have a different configuration. There will now be only 19 corners instead of 23 in the section of the circuit that was formerly Turns 16–19.
The adjustment will increase the number of laps from 61 to 62 and is estimated to make lap times around 10 seconds faster.
In Singapore, unpredictable weather might also be a problem; rain is predicted for the entire weekend. During the race, the temperature is predicted to peak at roughly 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius).
The same combination as last year, Pirelli's tire nominations are the softer C3 as the white hard, C4 as the yellow medium, and C5 as the red soft. Since the event takes place on a street circuit, teams must worry about the high degree of track evolution, which includes features like manholes and white lines that can change grip levels.
Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was the fastest after the early practice on Friday, followed by Carlos Sainz, a teammate.
With 364 points, Verstappen leads the 2023 Drivers' Championship heading into Saturday's qualifying and Sunday's race. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 170 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 219 points. Red Bull is in the lead with 583 points in the Constructors' Championship, followed by Mercedes-Benz AMG in second place with 273 points and Ferrari in third place with 228 points. Perez, who drives for Red Bull, won in Singapore last year.
