Formula One Austrian Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
This weekend's Austrian Grand Prix will bring the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship to the Red Bull Ring, which is tucked away in the Styrian Alps.
Following the Chinese and Miami Grands Prix, the race, which is round 11 on the Formula One calendar, is the second of a tripleheader and will feature the season's third Sprint race. Before the qualifying session for the main race on Sunday, the Sprint race is held on Saturday as a stand-alone points race. Following one practice session, it has its own qualifying session on Friday.
All of the action will take place on the Red Bull Ring, which is infamous for its high curbs and is regarded as one of the most difficult suspension tests. Because of their height and the speed at which the cars are moving, the curbs near the exits of Turns 1, 6, and 7 are most affected.
At barely 2.688 miles, the circuit is notable for having one of the season's shortest courses. This indicates that it takes slightly more than a minute to do a lap.
Three DRS zones and four lengthy straights are present. The latter may be found between Turns 3 and 4, on the ascent from Turns 2 to 3, and on the main straight. A broad gravel strip has been added at Turn 9's exit this year in an effort to decrease track limit infractions.
The track's surface is extremely abrasive, but because there are only ten turns, the tires experience very little lateral force, which leads to very little total wear. Consequently, Pirelli has designated the C3, C4, and C5 as its softest compounds.
The weather is an additional consideration for the Austrian round. The Red Bull Ring is located in a high-altitude mountain region at about 2,100 feet, so the weather may be erratic and temperatures can be a little cool. According to the present forecast, there will be pleasant weather with highs of about 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the Drivers' Championship with 219 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is in third place with 148 points, followed by Lando Norris of McLaren in second place with 150 points. With 330 points, Red Bull is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. McLaren is in third place with 237 points, while Ferrari is in second place with 270 points. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, won the Austrian race the previous year.
