Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch

This weekend, the 17th round of the 2024 Formula 1 season begins in Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea.
The 3.7-mile Baku City Circuit is the venue for the event. During practice, Franco Colapinto of Williams and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari both crashed.
Baku is the site of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and this weekend it will host Round 17 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship.

The race is the last European round on the schedule, and because of its unusual venue—the Baku City Circuit—it is one of the most watched.

A 1.3-mile straight, a lengthy pit along the Caspian Sea's coast, and a few tight turns in Baku's historic city center are the main features of the 3.7-mile Hermann Tilke-designed street circuit. More drivers switch gears at this circuit than any other on the calendar—64 times.

While the Baku City Circuit's long straights and heavy braking zones are similar to those at the Temple of Speed in Monza's Royal Park, the track section in the old town's winding labyrinth of streets is similar to that of the principality, making it possible to characterize it as a hybrid of Monaco and Monza. There aren't any tracks on the calendar with more braking zones than two grams.

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Franco Colapinto, a rookie for Williams, crashed during a Friday practice session, causing some drama.

Max Verstappen of Bull Racing leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 303 points heading into the weekend. Leclerc sits in third place with 217 points, followed by McLaren's Lando Norris in second place with 241 points. With 446 points, Red Bull is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari is in third place with 407 points, followed by McLaren in second place with 438 points. Red Bull driver Sergio Perez won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix the previous year.
