Formula One Bahrain Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
The Bahrain Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit this weekend marks the return of the Formula 1 World Championship following the extended winter vacation.
Although there aren't many new drivers or car designs for the 2024 season, viewers may anticipate a record 24 races. Like last year, three of those events will take place in the United States alone.
The inaugural round of Formula One has been held at the Bahrain International Circuit for the last three seasons. It is situated on a former camel farm in Sakhir's desert region, and a sticky adhesive solution is sprayed around the desert to reduce sand blowing onto the track.
One of the roughest courses on the schedule is the 3.36-mile course. It has three lengthy straightaways, two of which are DRS zones, and fifteen turns that offer a range of low, medium, and high speeds. Turn 1, where the cars brake hard from over 186 mph before diving into a tight right-hand turn and then transitioning to the left-hand side of the track for a sequence of bends, is typically the best opportunity to pass. The following DRS straight leads into Turn 11, and Turn 4 is another transitional point before the more congested second and third sectors.
The technical concerns here are stability under braking, engine performance, and traction out of turns. Additionally, tire degradation is a significant factor because of the track's abrasiveness. The three tire compounds Pirelli has proposed for the event are C1 (white hard), C2 (yellow medium), and C3 (red soft).
The event will be held on Saturday rather than Sunday as planned, and the weather looks to be moderate, with a high of about 72 degrees predicted. This is to keep the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, which is likewise scheduled for a Saturday to avoid conflict with the start of Ramadan, one week ahead of the following race on the schedule.
Red Bull Racing, the defending champion, is still widely regarded as the team to beat after three days of testing last week, which were also held at the Bahrain International Circuit. Having demonstrated remarkable speed, Mercedes-Benz AMG is probably going to be Red Bull's biggest rival.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull, who won in Bahrain the previous year and is vying for a fourth consecutive championship, will be the center of attention. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes also makes a comeback to try to win a record eighth championship, which would be his final season with Mercedes. In 2025, he has already committed to switching to Ferrari.
