Formula One Sao Paulo Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
The Brazilian Grand Prix, the third event in this season's American tripleheader that also includes the United States and Mexican Grands Prix, kicks off the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship this weekend.
This season, in addition to the main race on Sunday, there will be a stand-alone Sprint event on Saturday at São Paulo's Autódromo José Carlos Pace, where the Brazilian round is held. The season's fifth sprint race will take place in Brazil, with another one scheduled for the last round in Qatar.
Due to its location between two lakes, the Autódromo José Carlos Pace, commonly known to fans as Interlagos, is just 2.7 miles long. As a result, there is typically a lot of overtaking and drivers are regularly forced to leave the racing line.
Teams must consider altitude, just like they did in the last race in Mexico. The circuit is 2,625 feet above sea level, and the thinner air affects every aspect of the car's performance, but especially cooling and aerodynamics.
Furthermore, unpredictable weather and the typically high likelihood of a safety car make strategy ambiguous and challenging to plan. Another unknown element for drivers and teams this year is the newly placed asphalt.
The majority of those turns are very short, so lateral loads on the tires aren't too taxing, with the exception of the lengthy uphill Arquibancada left-hander. The C3, C4, and C5, Pirelli's softest compounds, have been nominated.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 362 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is in third place with 291 points, followed by Lando Norris of McLaren in second place with 315 points. With 566 points, McLaren is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Red Bull is in third place with 512 points, followed by Ferrari in second place with 537 points. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, was the winner in Brazil last year.
The McLaren MP4/5B that Ayrton Senna drove to a title win in the 1990 Formula One season will be on display in São Paulo as a tribute to the 30th anniversary of Senna's passing this year. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren's former driver, will be driving this weekend for an exhibition run, the company said on Thursday.
