Formula One Italian Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch

The Italian Grand Prix, round 16 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship, takes place this weekend.

Given its history and the large number of fervent Ferrari fans that attend each year, the race is one of the calendar's true highlights.

It is held at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, a circuit known as the Temple of Speed because its highest speeds frequently surpass 217 mph, which is just outside of Milan. This year, the entire track was resurfaced, and new curbs were put in, which might allow drivers to accelerate a bit more into some of the turns.

Similar to the British Grand Prix, the Italian Grand Prix has been a part of the Formula One schedule since the first season in 1950. With the exception of 1980, when it was hosted at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, it has always taken place in Monza. The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is the second Italian round that Formula One has added, and it is held in Imola.

There are a number of straights and some tight chicanes on the present 3.6-mile layout. Because there are just 11 corners on the course, drivers usually use full throttle for 77% of the lap time and 80% of the lap distance.

At 82%, only the Jeddah Street Circuit during the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix sees more time spent at full speed.

Cars are therefore configured with low downforce in order to enhance their top speeds. As a result, they become increasingly reliant on the tires' mechanical traction to keep them stable around turns. For the race, Pirelli has selected its softest mix of C3, C4, and C5 compounds.

This time of year, Monza typically has hot weather, which is advantageous because the lengthy straightaways can cause the tires to cool down excessively in warmer conditions. Sunny skies and highs of 90 degrees Fahrenheit are predicted for both Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race.

It's important to pay attention to some new drivers. Williams has brought Franco Colapinto in to play the rest of the season in lieu of Logan Sargeant, who has been struggling. Previously a driver for the team during a practice session at the 2024 British Grand Prix, Colapinto has been a member of Williams' driving academy since 2023.

During Friday's Italian Grand Prix practice, Mercedes-Benz AMG also let Andrea Kimi Antonelli to ride in George Russell's vehicle.

Although he was swift, he crashed within ten minutes. Antonelli, who is most likely to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes next season, drove an F1 car for the first time. Hamilton is on his way to Ferrari.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 296 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is in third place with 192 points, followed by Lando Norris of McLaren in second place with 225 points. With 434 points, Red Bull is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari is in third place with 370 points, followed by McLaren in second place with 404 points. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, was the winner in Monza last year.
