Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
This weekend, the third-to-last race of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will take place in Las Vegas.
Although there have been previous Formula One races in Sin City, the Las Vegas Grand Prix was held for the first time last year. The Las Vegas Strip Circuit, created by Tilke, the design firm of racetrack designer Hermann Tilke and his son Carsten, is based on the streets of Las Vegas in its current configuration.
With 17 corners and a length of 3.85 miles, the Las Vegas Strip Circuit is the second-longest racetrack after Spa-Francorchamps.
The course actually runs down the well-known Strip and features the Sphere and other of the city's most iconic attractions in the background. Many of the neon lights in the city are also visible because the race is place at night.
A brief run from the starting line to the first corner, a tight left-hander, and a succession of more flowing bends that lead into the first of two DRS zones make up the circuit's layout. As the vehicles speed down the Strip, the second DRS zone is located in the second sector, where drivers accelerate out of Turn 9 and make a quick left turn onto the second straight.
Pirelli has chosen its three softest compounds, C3, C4, and C5, for the race, as is customary for street circuits. Maintaining temperatures in the chilly weather will be the biggest obstacle for the tires, particularly during qualifying. During the race, the track's temperatures are predicted to drop to about 50 degrees.
The race and qualifying are held on Saturday rather than Sunday as is customary, which makes the weekend's schedule a little different from normal F1 weekend.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, drivers for Mercedes-Benz AMG, showed unexpected speed after Thursday's first practice. Red Bull Racing's defending champion Max Verstappen was slowed down, while McLaren's Lando Norris was also at the top of the time sheets.
Verstappen leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 393 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari sits in third place with 307 points, followed by Norris in second place with 331 points. With 593 points, McLaren is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Red Bull is in third place with 544 points, followed by Ferrari in second place with 557 points. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, won in Las Vegas the previous year.
