Formula One Mexican Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch

This weekend, the Mexican Grand Prix, round 20 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship, will be held at Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin will be making his 400th start in the race, which is the second of an American tripleheader that began with the US Grand Prix and will end with the Brazilian Grand Prix.

This year, the 43-year-old two-time world champion is in his 21st Formula One season and has no immediate plans to retire. He signed a new multi-year contract with Aston Martin in April, so by the time he turns 44 next season, he will have raced in Formula One for half of his life.

With Renault, Alonso won the world championships in 2005 and 2006 after making his debut in 2001. Some of the current drivers weren't even born when he began racing. Alonso also battled Jean Alesi, who made his first debut in 1989, during his first season in 2001. It indicates that a driver who competed against a driver who was active in Formula One in the 1980s is still on the grid.

Officially known as the Mexico City Grand Prix, this weekend's race in Mexico takes place on a tiny 2.7-mile course at an elevation of nearly 7,500 feet. The engines have to work harder because the air density is lower (oxygen levels are 78% of what they are at sea level), and it is also more difficult to generate enough cooling and downforce. Because of the low air density, top speeds are among the highest of the season, with cars usually reaching 217 mph.

A long straight, a mixed middle sector, and the renowned Peraltada—which has been significantly altered from its original use as a parabolic corner evoking the one at Monza—make up the current configuration. At 2,660 feet, the layout is renowned for having the largest distance between the starting line and the first corner's braking position.

Mexico experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the day, even within a few hours, which impacts the tires' ability to provide traction. For the weekend, Pirelli has selected its softest mix of C3, C4, and C5 compounds. Teams will also test a 2025 season prototype compound during a practice session on Friday.

With 354 points heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing is leading the 2024 Drivers' Championship. Lando Norris of McLaren is in second place with 297 points, while Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is in third place with 275 points. With 544 points, McLaren is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari is in third place with 496 points, followed by Red Bull in second place with 504 points. The Red Bull driver Verstappen won in Mexico last year.
