Formula One Qatar Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
Teams have traveled 8,000 miles to the Persian Gulf, specifically to Qatar for this weekend's penultimate race of the season, just days after the Las Vegas Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing was crowned the 2024 Formula 1 World Champion.
A postponed Australian Grand Prix was replaced by the Qatar Grand Prix in 2021, and starting in 2023, it will be a regular event on the schedule. This year, as previous year, there will be a stand-alone Sprint event in addition to the main race at the Losail International Circuit, which is situated outside of Doha, the capital of Qatar.
The 3.43-mile circuit at the Losail International Circuit is encircled by a ring of artificial grass that prevents sand from collecting on the surface. Due to the fact that it was first created for motorcycle racing, notably MotoGP, the track has a fast and flowing layout, which makes passing challenging.
The main straight is over a fifth of a lap long, with the single DRS zone at the conclusion. There are a total of 16 turns (10 right-handers and 6 left-handers). Due to significant tire wear, the organizers last year mandated that drivers pit every 18 laps on one of the most abrasive surfaces on the calendar. This year, however, that isn't anticipated to be the case. Pirelli has selected its hardest compounds, the C1, C2, and C3, because of the difficult conditions.
Because of the intense heat, the conditions of last year's event were likewise nearly difficult to manage. The race this year, however, is held two months later, during a significantly colder period. As of right now, high temperatures are only expected to reach about 75 degrees Fahrenheit.
The main race takes place on Sunday, while the Sprint race and qualifying session take place on Saturday. Before Sunday's main race qualifying session, there is a stand-alone points race called the Sprint race. Following one practice session, it has its own qualifying session on Friday.
The competition for second place in the Drivers' standings and first place in the Constructors' standings is still very much alive, despite Verstappen's announcement as the 2024 World Champion.
Verstappen has 403 points in the 2024 Drivers' Championship going into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari is in third place with 319 points, followed by Lando Norris of McLaren in second place with 340 points. With 608 points, McLaren is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Red Bull is in third place with 555 points, followed by Ferrari in second place with 584 points.
