Formula One Singapore Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
This weekend, Round 17 of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship will take place at Singapore's Marina Bay Circuit, famous for hosting Formula 1's first night race in 2008.
Because of the short straights, tight corners, and uneven surface, which keep speeds from rising too high, teams with slower cars have a higher chance of winning, much like in Monaco.
However, the Singapore Grand Prix is one of the most difficult to have the perfect car setup for due to the track's circumstances. In addition to the race's lengthy two-hour duration, Singapore is a true challenge for both car and driver due to the high temperatures, high humidity, and stop-start conditions of the track.
The circuit was cut short before last year's race, converting the extremely slow turn 16–19 stretch into a lengthy straight that allows for passing. The present layout has four DRS zones, 19 corners, and a total length of just over three miles. The modifications resulted in a reduction of around 10 seconds in lap timings.
With the current prognosis predicting some rain during Saturday's qualifying session and dry but hazy conditions during Sunday's race, Singapore's weather can also be unpredictable. On Sunday, the highest temperature is predicted to be around 90 degrees with a 70% humidity level.
The tire nominated by Pirelli is the softest mix of C3, C4, and C5 compositions. As additional rubber is thrown down every lap and the racing line on the typically public road is cleared of dirt, teams must be concerned about the high degree of track evolution. Grip levels can also be changed by elements like white lines and manholes.
After some early practice on Friday, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was the fastest, followed by Carlos Sainz of Ferrari and Lando Norris of McLaren.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 313 points heading into the weekend. Leclerc is in third place with 235 points, followed by Norris in second place with 254 points. With 476 points, McLaren is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Ferrari is in third place with 425 points, followed by Red Bull in second place with 456 points. Sainz, who drives for Ferrari, won in Singapore last year.
