Formula One French Grand Prix 2019 What to Watch
The Formula One World Championship has returned to Europe after previously being held in Canada. Teams are getting ready for this weekend's French Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard, which is situated on the French Riviera between Marseille and Toulon.
This season's eighth round marks the 16th time the event has been held at the track, with the first being in 1971. But the French Grand Prix has a considerably longer history. The first Grand Prix, which is French for "Big Prize," was the 1906 French Grand Prix, thus it actually goes all the way back to the beginning of motorsport. At the time, the original grand reward was worth 28.6 pounds of gold, or 45,000 Francs.
The contemporary circuit Paul Ricard is one of the most popular test circuits worldwide because it has an even distribution of high, medium, and low speed corners. Additionally, the track is well-known for its blue and red run-off zones, which are meant to eliminate the need for gravel traps.
Since last year, the track has undergone significant resurfacing, with new asphalt used to almost every corner, or about one-third of the lap. This indicates that the surface is rather smooth, which means that tire degradation is typically minimal. However, some thermal damage may result from the anticipated warm weather in the south of France at this time of year. For the weekend, Pirelli has nominated its C2, C3, and C4 compounds.
Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG set the fastest times following Friday's first practice session, followed by Valtteri Bottas, a teammate. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari and Max Verstappen of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing were just behind them.
With 162 points, Hamilton leads the 2019 Drivers' Championship going into tomorrow's qualifying and Sunday's race. Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari sits in third place with 100 points, while Bottas is in second place with 133 points. Red Bull is in third place with 124 points, Ferrari is in second place with 172 points, and Mercedes is in first place with 295 points in the Constructors' Championship. Hamilton, who was driving for Mercedes, won in France last year.
