Formula One Austrian Grand Prix 2022 What to Watch
This weekend, the Red Bull Ring's home and the location of the yearly Austrian Grand Prix, Spielberg, Austria, will host Round 11 of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship.
A lap of the Red Bull Ring, which has just 10 corners—the fewest of any track on the calendar—takes 68 seconds, and it is only 2.688 miles long. The engineering prioritizes traction and straight-line speed because there are four lengthy straights, each followed by a slow curve.
The track gets more faster as the weekend progresses, and the surface has low abrasion and low grip. Finding steady grip is challenging because of the track's uneven patches, despite the asphalt's recent installation. C3 is the White hard, C4 is the Yellow medium, and C5 is the Red soft, according to Pirelli's nomination.
The Red Bull Ring is regarded as one of the most difficult suspension tests and is infamous for its harsh curbs. This is particularly true for the curbs at Turn 1, Turn 6, and Turn 7 exits, which have a particularly high impact on cars because of their height and the speed at which they are moving.
Weather is another thing to watch out for during the Austrian round. Temperatures can be a little chilly because of the Red Bull Ring's high elevation (around 2,100 feet). The placement of the mountains may also cause some unpredictability in the weather. The race on Sunday is expected to take place in pleasant weather with the possibility of minor rain.
A sprint race will be held for qualifying at this year's Austrian round; this is a new idea that was implemented at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in April of last year. In contrast to last year, the sprint race winner now receives eight points rather than five, and the top eight finishers now receive points instead of only the first three.
In order to establish the starting grid for the 62-mile sprint race scheduled for Saturday, a typical time-based qualifying session is held following a single practice session on Friday. The starting grid for the full-length race on Sunday is then decided by the sprint race results.
With 181 points heading into Saturday's qualifying race and Sunday's full-length race, Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing is leading the 2022 Drivers' Championship. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari sits in third place with 138 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 147 points. With 328 points, Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Ferrari (265 points) and Mercedes-Benz AMG (204 points). Red Bull driver Verstappen won the Austria race last year.
