Formula One Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2019 What to Watch
Teams are in Baku, the site of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, this weekend for the fourth round of the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship.
The event takes place at the 3.73-mile Baku City Circuit, a street circuit created by Hermann Tilke. Its main features include a lengthy 1.3-mile straight, a long pit that runs along the Caspian Sea's coast, and some tight turns in the city's historic district.
The circuit presents a number of difficulties, such as challenging braking zones and some steep hills. Baku doesn't have any high-speed bends to push energy through the tires, but the downforce requirements are the second-lowest of the year here, after the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Teams therefore try to reduce downforce as much as they can while making sure the tires are working hard enough to maintain ideal temperatures of about 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius).
This is complicated by the fact that the weekend's primary competitive periods occur at dusk, when the track can chill rapidly and frequently catches drivers off guard. Additionally, the weather is predicted to be moderate this weekend, with a high temperature of about 66 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) predicted for Sunday's race. For the weekend, Pirelli has nominated its C2, C3, and C4 compounds.
With 68 points heading into Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes-AMG is leading the 2019 Drivers' Championship. Max Verstappen of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing is in third place with 39 points, followed by fellow Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas in second place with 62 points. Mercedes leads the Constructors' Championship with 130 points, followed by Ferrari with 73 and Red Bull with 52. Hamilton, who was driving for Mercedes, won Baku the previous year.
