Austrian Grand Prix What to Watch

Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel claim they want to move on, but they both know they can't after their fight for the Formula 1 title erupted in Azerbaijan two weeks ago.

You know the story by now. Vettel thought Hamilton brake-checked him out of Turn 15 under the safety car, and the German lost his mind, crashing the Mercedes in retaliation.

Vettel was effectively released from penalty after being dragged before an FIA tribunal in Paris on Monday.

"Am I proud of the moment?" asked Vettel during the FIA Press Conference. No. Is it refundable? No. Do I feel bad about it? Indeed. I made a mistake.

A few days after the race, Hamilton acknowledged that he had received an apology text from Vettel, which he had accepted, but the British driver rejected the non-apology.

Let's talk about on-track activities when Formula One travels to Austria and the Red Bull Ring. Enough about the off-track antics.

At the front, Mercedes and Ferrari are engaged in a real battle royale, and even a small error—like a headrest coming loose—could have major consequences at the end of the season.

Red Bull will be looking to improve on Max Verstappen's lone podium result from '14, which he achieved last season, as it returns to its home track.

Verstappen, who has not finished four of the last six races—including the past two where the Renault engine blew up while he was in a podium position—will simply want to see the chequered flag.

Given that Sergio Perez's unwillingness to participate in the team game in Canada escalated tensions and caused the crash in Azerbaijan, Force India will be hoping that Perez and Esteban Ocon are not too near on the track on Sunday.

Perez has stated that the young Frenchman must comprehend "what racing means." Nevertheless, the two will converse.

Jolyon Palmer's future at Renault is becoming increasingly uncertain, particularly after Robert Kubica declared that his chances of rejoining Formula One were "at 80-90%" after he performed admirably in tests at Valencia, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, and the 2012 spec Renault.

From starting at the back in Azerbaijan to finishing a few circuits in, Palmer's season has become worse in recent races. This season, Renault aimed to finish fifth in the constructors' division, but Nico Hulkenberg has been the only contributor to the team's 18 points. Palmer needs to deliver now or else.

The Red Bull Ring has ten corners this year, up from nine last year. Turn 2 gets its name because of the minor left curve in the climb up the hill from Turn 1. Turn 3 is now the tight right at the top of the hill, which was once Turn 2.

Although the track doesn't require as much force as Canada or Azerbaijan, it doesn't hurt to grunt a little, especially when leaving the heavy traction zones that consume rear tires for breakfast, lunch, and supper.

Two DRS zones are located along the pit straight and the run from Turn 3 to Turn 4.

Pirelli's new tires for 2017 are much more durable than those from prior years. This indicates that softer rubber is typically preferred, but occasionally it can still be too hard, and when combined with excessive tire pressure, it can be quite challenging to get the tires into the proper operating window.

The intermediate and wet tires are also being transported to Austria, and the Italian manufacturer has chosen to use ultra-soft, super-soft, and soft compound rubber for the weekend.
