Formula One Belgian Grand Prix 2020 What to Watch
This weekend marks the start of the seventh round and next triple header of the updated 2020 Formula One World Championship at the Belgian Grand Prix's home track, Spa-Francorchamps.
With an average speed of nearly 145 mph, the renowned circuit in the stunning Ardennes is one of the fastest laps of the season. Its long, relentless course is a harsh test for both driver and vehicle. How difficult is it? Some of the turns, like Turn 10, sometimes called Pouhon, cause drivers to experience more than 5 g. Additionally, the cars spend about 80% of the lap at full speed.
Spa has the longest track on the schedule, spanning 4.35 miles. It's actually so large that varied weather conditions in different places are common. For instance, sunlight at one end and rain at the other. Although there is a potential of light rain during Sunday's race, the weather forecast thankfully predicts largely pleasant conditions throughout the weekend.
Because to Spa's somewhat rough track surface, tires endure a lot of wear and tear. Compared to last year, Pirelli's nominations for the weekend are softer and include its C2, C3, and C4 compounds. Pirelli says this is because last year, the majority of teams opted for the softer compounds.
Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes-AMG was the fastest driver after Friday's early practice, closely followed by Lewis Hamilton of his team and Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing.
As of tomorrow's qualifying session and Sunday's race, Hamilton has 132 points, the lead in the 2020 Drivers' Championship. With 95 points, Verstappen sits in second place, and Bottas is in third place with 89 points. Mercedes leads the Constructors' Championship with 221 points, while Red Bull has 135 and Racing Point has 63. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari won the Spa race last year, marking his first triumph at the storied track.
