Formula One Spanish Grand Prix 2020 What to Watch

This weekend, the well-liked Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which is now the site of the Spanish Grand Prix, will host round six of the updated 2020 Formula One schedule.

Since it has been on the schedule since 1991, teams and drivers are familiar with the circuit. The formal winter testing is also conducted there.

The current layout offers a true test of a car's ability because it includes a lengthy straight, a number of direction changes, climbs and drops, and a mix of high, medium, and low speed corners. A gradual chicane going onto the straight now replaces the high-speed final section.

Drivers have a number of excellent overtaking opportunities, and tire strategy is always crucial. Additionally, the surface used to be really rough, but it was just replaced a few seasons ago, so tire wear and deterioration shouldn't be too bad. But as we've learned over the last two rounds, you can never be too sure when it comes to the newest Pirelli tires. As last year, the C1, C2, and C3 compounds are nominated for the weekend.

The air and track temperatures will be significantly higher this year because the race is being scheduled in the middle of summer instead of the customary spring date. According to the weather forecast, Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's race should both be pleasant but warm.

Because the sea and mountains are so close together, the wind here frequently changes direction throughout the day. Because it significantly throws off the car's equilibrium, this can be challenging to deal with. In the mornings, the main straight usually has a tailwind, which creates a headwind into the fast turns and improves vehicle stability. It becomes challenging when this headwind becomes a tailwind, which usually happens in the afternoon.

Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes-AMG led the time sheets after an early practice session on Friday, closely followed by teammate Lewis Hamilton. Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing came quite near as well, and if all goes well, he will be able to challenge the Mercedes pair once more, just like he did at the Silverstone Circuit's 70th Anniversary Grand Prix last weekend in the United Kingdom.

Hamilton leads the 2020 Drivers' Championship with 107 points heading into the weekend. With 77 points, Verstappen is in second place, and Bottas is in third place with 73 points. Mercedes has 180 points in the Constructors' Championship, compared to Red Bull's 113 and Ferrari's 55. Hamilton, who drives for Mercedes, won in Spain last year.
