Formula One British Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch

Round 11 of the British Grand Prix, which is once again being held at the storied Silverstone Circuit, is the next stop in the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship battle.

On the Formula One calendar, the British round is always one of the favorites. The history of Silverstone, the fans' expertise and racing culture, the unpredictability of the weather, and the fact that several teams are situated nearby all contribute to its appeal.

In 1950, Silverstone hosted the first Formula One race. Although Aintree and Brands Hatch swapped hosting responsibilities for the British Grand Prix in subsequent years, Silverstone is still the race's official home. Since the first race, the track layout has undergone numerous revisions. The most notable of these was in 2010, when a new infield section was added to the previous perimeter layout.

Silverstone is the fifth-longest track in 2023 at 3.66 miles. The track for the new Las Vegas Grand Prix, which is 3.8 miles long, has pushed it back up to the fourth-longest position. Silverstone is one of the fastest tracks on the calendar and a favorite among drivers due to its layout, which includes fast straights and sweeping, high-speed turns.

The high speed and sharp turns at Silverstone don't put a lot of load on the brakes. As a result, teams may concentrate on other aspects, such aerodynamics, instead of brake cooling. Given that 78% of a lap is completed at full throttle, the fifth-highest percentage of the season, power unit performance is particularly crucial.

Teams must be prepared for the unpredictable weather at Silverstone. There may be some storms during Saturday's qualifying session and a light drizzle during Sunday's race, according to the latest weather forecast.

New Pirelli tires that are more resilient and capable of handling the high strain imposed on them will be another factor. The compounds C1 (white hard), C2 (yellow medium), and C3 (red soft) have been chosen for the race.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2023 Drivers' Championship with 229 points heading into the weekend. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 131 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 148 points. Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship with 377 points, followed by Mercedes-Benz AMG in second place with 178 and Aston Martin in third place with 175 points. Carlos Sainz, a Ferrari driver, won the U.K. race last year.
