Formula One Monaco Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch

The 2023 Formula 1 World Championship resumes this weekend with round seven, the Monaco Grand Prix, held on the streets of Monte Carlo, after the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola was canceled last weekend due to severe flooding.

Every driver aspires to win the Monaco Grand Prix at least once in their career, making it the most renowned event on the schedule. With only 34% of a lap being completed at full power, the modest speeds achieved on the constrained Monaco street track make it somewhat of an outlier. Qualifying is more crucial at Monaco than at any other circuit because of the circumstances, which make overtaking very challenging.

Antony Noghès, whose name appears on the last turn of the present circuit, arranged the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929. The Monaco race was included in the first Formula One schedule in 1950 and has been a recurring event since 1955. The 2.1-mile street circuit, formally known as the Circuit de Monaco, has mostly maintained its configuration over the years, with the construction of a new pit complex in 2004 marking the most significant changes.

Even at modest speeds, drivers must maintain complete focus at all times due to the narrow layout and closed walls, which leave no room for error. The entire weekend can be ruined by braking even seven feet too late.

A lucky driver will find themselves on an escape path. Otherwise, the vehicle is damaged.

There isn't much rubber left on the surface by the time of Sunday's race because the track is entirely made up of public roads that open to regular traffic in the evening following Friday's practice and Saturday's qualifying, which results in poor grip levels as well. In order to increase grip, cars in Monaco operate in a unique high-downforce configuration.

Slow speeds combined with the slick surface imply that the tires will not deteriorate too much. Thus, the C3 is the White hard, the C4 is the Yellow medium, and the C5 is the Red soft. These are Pirelli's softest compounds.

Pirelli claims that the new tires don't require blankets when not in use.

Several teams may run their first upgrades of the season at Monaco instead of Imola, where they were scheduled to do so at the previous round. Mercedes-Benz AMG has revealed that it would implement six changes this weekend, including a revised rear wing, modified sidepods, and new suspension mounting points.

Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the Drivers' Championship with 119 points heading into the weekend. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 75 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 105 points. With 224 points, Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Aston Martin with 102 and Mercedes with 96. The driver for Red Bull, Perez, won the Monaco race last year.
