Formula One Spanish Grand Prix 2023 What to Watch
This weekend, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain will host the eighth round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship.
The track configuration for this year's Spanish Grand Prix is a slight departure from the previous one, which was in place until 2006. The main change is that the third sector's sluggish chicane has been eliminated, cutting the 2.9-mile course by about 60 feet from the year before.
Since 1991, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya has been a popular venue for pre-season testing, so teams and drivers are familiar with it.
It has a lengthy start-finish straight, undulations, changes of direction, and a variety of high-, medium-, and low-speed bends. It is the perfect location for testing because it has a little bit of everything.
Balance is also made more difficult by the Circuit of Barcelona-Catalunya's frequent changes in wind direction. Typically, a headwind enters the high-speed corners from a tailwind on the morning's main straight. This contributes to improved vehicle stability. In the afternoon, it then has a tendency to rotate in the opposite direction, so drivers must adjust.
The qualifying session on Saturday and the race on Sunday are both expected to see some rain, according to the weather forecast.
The C1 is the White hard tire compound, the C2 is the Yellow medium tire compound, and the C3 is the Red soft tire compound. Pirelli has designated these as their harshest tire compositions for the weekend. Pirelli has announced that teams would have the opportunity to test tires with compounds already prepared for the 2024 season during the practice sessions. In order to handle the higher downforce and faster speeds of the newest generation of Formula One vehicles, the compounds have been strengthened to boost their resistance.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2023 Drivers' Championship with 144 points heading into the weekend. Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin sits in third place with 93 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 105 points. With 249 points, Red Bull is in the lead in the Constructors' Championship. Mercedes-Benz AMG is in third place with 119 points, followed by Aston Martin in second place with 120 points. Verstappen, who drives for Red Bull, won in Spain last year.
