Formula One Miami Grand Prix 2024 What to Watch
This weekend marks the start of the 2024 Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome, a street circuit situated within the Hard Rock Stadium complex, home of the Miami Dolphins.
The event is the first of three U.S. races this season, along with the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, and the Las Vegas Grand Prix. It is round six on the 2024 Formula One calendar.
In addition to the main race, the Miami Grand Prix will also feature a Sprint race. This season's second Sprint event follows the first, which was held during the Chinese Grand Prix.
On Saturdays, before the main race's qualifying session, there is a stand-alone points race called the Sprint race. Following one practice session, it has its own qualifying session on Fridays.
Since its debut in 2022, the Miami Grand Prix has grown to be a favorite among drivers. Since vehicles may often reach 200 mph on the back straight, the track ranks well in terms of highest speeds. It has three DRS zones, 19 low-speed and high-speed turns, and a total length of 3.36 miles.
Between the first race in 2022 and the second edition last year, the track had a few minor changes. One of these was resurfacing the track with a new aggregate in advance of 2023, which would give cars more grip and increase their chances of passing.
For this weekend, Pirelli has selected its mid-range C2, C3, and C4 tires. The majority of teams will probably choose a one-stop approach, but if degradation is more severe than anticipated, that may alter.
Although the prediction currently calls for great conditions for Saturday's Sprint and qualifying sessions as well as Sunday's main race, the weather on the Miami coast is quite variable. It is predicted that the ambient temperature will rise to 83 degrees.
Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing leads the 2024 Drivers' Championship with 110 points heading into the weekend. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari sits in third place with 76 points, followed by fellow Red Bull driver Sergio Perez in second place with 85 points. With 195 points, Red Bull leads the Constructors' Championship, followed by Ferrari with 151 and McLaren with 96. Verstappen, who was driving for Red Bull, won in Miami the previous year.
